WHAT IS IT? The 'morning after pill' is an intense dose of oral contraceptive, trademarked under the name Plan B®. It is the only oral contraceptive of its kind approved by the FDA for use in the United States. The normal dosage is actually 2 tablets, one taken up to 72 hours after sexual intercourse, and the second tablet taken 12 hours later. Plan B® is NOT the same as RU486.

HOW DOES IT WORK? Plan B® works as an emergency contraceptive, principally by preventing ovulation or fertilization. Additionally, it may inhibit implantation. It is ineffective once implantation has occurred.
